Two short stories by Debra Doyle and James D. Macdonald, set in the universe of the popular Mageworlds series.
In one, a pair of free-spacers have more fun on shore-leave than they really wanted when their ship touches down in the wide-open asteroid town On Suivi Point.
In the second, a murder, a mystery, and academia mix with surprises aplenty during A Death in the Working.
"On Suivi Point" first appeared in Cosmic Tales Adventures in the Far Future, T. K. F. Weisskopf, ed. Baen Books, 2005.
"A Death in the Working" first appeared in Murder by Magic, Rosemary Edghill, ed., Warner/Aspect, October 2004.
The Mageworlds "One of the most enjoyable space opera series currently being written."

Two from the Mage World moves along at a quick pace. I founde it to be a easy and enjoyable read with plenty of action and always wanting to just what was around the next corner. I recommend this and the others in the series.
This series is very well written and hard to put down once you begin reading.

I've been a fan of the Mageworlds books for years, ever since I picked up a copy of "The Price of the Stars" and spent many frustrated months trying to track down the rest of the trilogy. While I enjoyed the four subsequent books, they never quite recaptured the magic of the original three. These short stories do.
The first is a fun adventure, following Beka and Ignac on a visit to Suivi Point during Beka's days on a tramp freighter. It's fun, consistent with their prior characterization, and fun. Oh, and it's got a sense of humor - the villain's code names for their schemes made me giggle. While I preferred the second story, I would gladly pay to read more of Beka's pre-Warhammer escapades. Or even other stories from this setting featuring the adventures of similarly calm and competent spacers.
The second story is my favorite of the two. It is presented as a short mystery story from Mageworlds literary canon. The story itself is fun and slightly alien, capturing the feel of the Mageworlds well. What I really appreciated was the way the literary framing allowed Doyle and MacDonald to describe - through copious footnotes - the social and mystical particularities of Mageworlds culture that had previously confused me when reading The Stars Asunder and A Working of Stars. I'd very much like to see more stories of this sort. Prior Mageworlds books had hinted at the depths of culture and history on both sides of The Gap Between, and this short story provides further tantalizing hints. As a fan of mystery, history and space opera, I'd be unable to pass up more fictional "annotated historical fiction". Particularly if it happened to feature Rasha Jedao and Jerre syn-Casleyn.
Love these authors. I have read the Mageworld trilogy and these two short stories fit the same mold. Looking forward to reading more of their books.
