Close to a billion women will enter the global workforce by 2020, but these women are likely to drop out or get stuck in dead-end jobs without making fundamental changes to their organizations. Author Ruchika Tulshyan explores how diversity in the workplace isn’t just the “right” thing to do—it’s a financially savvy strategy in today’s hyper-competitive digital marketplace.

To be clear, this book is not a feminist manifesto. Gender equality is a human rights issue, but engaging women in the workforce is primarily an economic issue—diverse leaders drive bottom-line growth and high-level innovation for global corporations. But this book isn’t only for women, chief inclusion officers or HR practitioners. It offers insight and case studies on why it’s a priority for everyone in an organization. To attract, retain and promote women, the best companies worldwide have made inclusion part of their entire culture, not just their hiring processes.

Diversity sounds great in principle—the desire for a fair and equitable workplace for all is a moral right. But this alone hasn’t moved gender inclusivity far beyond a cursory afterthought in most organizations. Tulshyan looks at the impact on the bottom line in order to drive initiatives that really work.

As far as I am concerned The Diversity Advantage: Fixing Gender Inequality In The Workplace completes an important trilogy of books that have helped me to reflect on the contributions that I have made, and those I still have to make, as a female business leader. The first of those was Sheryl Sandberg's Lean In, the second was Power Through Partnership by Betsy Polk and Maggie Ellis Chotas, and the third is Ruchika's The Diversity Advantage. She has curated the most recent research, conducted dozens of interviews with a literal who's who in the world of diversity and inclusion, and profiled the cutting edge tech tools and processes that are interrupting bias in real-time.

I recently met Ruchika when we were both on a panel about the bias that women experience in the workplace on HuffPost Live right before The Diversity Advantage was released. I felt like I was at a dinner party with people who get it while reading her book. At last, a well researched book that includes an analysis of international family friendly policies and the financial benefits that could be realized if the US followed suit. I spent the first 20 years of my career living and working in the UK and only recently returned to the US. I am always talking about the disparity in policies that have put American women and families at a real disadvantage. To see this aspect covered so well in The Diversity Advantage gave me hope that the growing momentum to fix this will result in meaningful change at some point in the not to distant future.

By framing the entire discussion with the financial gains to be realized Ruchika ensures that this discussion cannot be relegated to simply being a nice to have, or a 'women only' discussion. The estimated bottom line impact is a $12 trillion boost to the global economy by 2025. These are numbers that cannot be ignored. Working on fixing bias in the workplace and increasing diversity and inclusion takes time, it is easy to be inspired by small successes, while at the same time being disheartened by the amount of time that it takes. Ruchika's book inspires me to continue on this path because the difference to be achieved is significant. The Diversity Advantage is a must read. It is a comprehensive business case for diversity and inclusion. All business leaders would benefit from reading this book.

The Diversity Advantage Fixing Gender Inequality In the Workplace eBook Ruchika Tulshyan Reviews

As a practitioner, teacher and writer on topics related to diversity, I have read a lot of books. This one is my favorite it is clear, well written, and full of real-world examples and practical advice.
A must read for anyone setting hiring policy for any work place or with an interest and passion for gender and ethnic equity in the workplace! Tulshyan not only highlights existing disparities for women and other minorities in the work place, she provides actionable solutions that can ameliorate them. Those of us who have done some work in 'diversity' often face the question 'Why is diversity so important (beyond just simple fairness)?' Tulshyan helps answer this question by making a strong case for the advantage diversity provides to organizations.
Ruchika's book is an essential read for anyone interested in leadership and management. By presenting the lack of diversity in the workplace as an economic issue rather than a moral one, Ruchika manages to highlight the potential for champions of gender equality to promote growth and savings within their companies. Ruchika also examines the challenges facing working women today, and in doing so illuminates America's shockingly poor track record of providing women (and men) who have families with the flexibility required to retain them. Managers can also benefit from the easily implemented solutions offered by Ruchika as she discusses each problem, all of which will ultimately contribute to a stronger team, company and economy.
I don't think I quite understood the need for a book about gender equality (or lack thereof) until I started working. The clear imbalance between the number of men vs number of women in managerial positions is shocking, especially because evidence indicates that most women are just as (if not more) competent employees as are men. What makes Tulshyan's book stand apart from other books covering gender equality is the way she draws a clear link between evidence and policy proposals. Further, she makes these policy proposals feasible, so employers can actually consider implementing them. But don't take my word for how amazing the book is--read it for yourself!
Ruchika in her book has made a clear business case backed by data and case studies, why hiring, retaining and promoting women is so essential to the success of your organization. This is a must read for anyone aspiring to be a great manager or leader. This is definitely not a feminist manifesto, as is the case with many other books I've previously read on this topic. It's evident after reading this book that any organization that does not make a conscious effort to hire and promote women will not be able to compete in this day and age. Ruchika lays this out brilliantly, and offers practical tips/recommendations for both big and small organizations to gain the competitive advantage. The writing is crisp and to the point, the content is well thought out and interesting to read. Some of the data/case studies she presents is shockingly true and makes it a fascinating read.
The case for gender equality shouldn't still need to be made, but it does and too often authors get caught up in the argument -- and go no further. Ruchika Tulshyan presents a clear case backed by research and powerful anecdotes but then does what no other author (that I've read) has done She provides real, actionable, plausible strategies for companies to implement. Like, right now.

This book is a must-read for anyone who manages people, period. But for our global economy to truly benefit from recruiting, retaining and promoting women, this book should be on every executive's night stand. And why wouldn't it be? Tulshyan's compilation of research demonstrates unequivocally that supporting gender equality is good business.

In sum Wondering what to get your boss's boss's boss for the holidays? This book.
